On 24 April 2026, UNSW Sydney successfully held the Torch Innovation Precinct 10-Year Anniversary Event in Beijing under the theme of "10 Years of Torch@UNSW: Powering Innovation, Shaping the Future", aiming to review achievements of the past decade, showcase cutting-edge innovative technologies, build a bridge for university-industry cooperation and investment matchmaking, as well as to further advance the development of new quality productive forces. As a ground-breaking and internationally connected innovation program, Torch@UNSW has upheld the mission of China-Australia science and technology cooperation through a decade of dedicated development. It has built an international innovation framework for in-depth industry-university-research integration and bi-directional technology transformation, not only to fully showcase high-impact scientific and technological innovation collaboration with broad prospects between Australia and China, but also aligns closely with UNSW’s strategy of “Progress for All”, which focuses on equitable higher education access, strengthen talent development systems as well to take high-quality teaching, cutting-edge technology and innovative practices as a foundation for continuous social progress.
本次活动汇聚中澳双方政府代表、悉尼新南威尔士大学校领导、顶尖学科教授、科研机构、合作企业等。与会嘉宾围绕能源转型、环境可持续、人类健康等全球性课题展开深度对话,全面回顾十年合作硕果,共商中澳科创合作新路径,携手擘画未来十年战略蓝图。
The event brought together of government representatives from both China and Australia, the President of UNSW, scientia professors, research institutions and partner enterprises. All attendees held in-depth discussions on global issues including energy transition, environmental sustainability and human health, comprehensively reviewed the decade of cooperative achievements, explored new pathways for China-Australia scientific and technological innovation collaboration, and jointly mapped out the strategic blueprint for the next decade.
活动当天下午举办了科研技术路演。悉尼新南威尔士大学产业与创新协理副校长Stephen Rodda教授在欢迎辞中回顾了火炬创新园区的十年发展历程,高度肯定火炬创新模式对深化中澳产学研合作的重要推动作用,他着重强调了“火炬创新园区”对中澳经济和科技发展具有重要意义,并将持续为世界贡献科研智慧与创新成果。
In the welcome address, Professor Stephen Rodda, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Industry and Innovation) of UNSW reviewed the 10-year development of Torch@UNSW, highly recognizing the vital role of the Chinese “Torch” model in advancing China-Australia industry-university-research collaboration. He emphasized the significant contribution of Torch@UNSW to the economic and technological development in both countries, noting that it will continue to deliver world-leading research outcomes for the global community.

Yuqi Zheng, Director-General of New Technology Centre of the Ministry of Science and Technology of PRC, pointed out in the speech that the Torch Innovation Precinct, as a major platform for China-Australia science and technology cooperation, has always taken technological innovation cooperation as its core and industrial demand as its orientation. Through such models as scientific and technological achievement roadshows, project matching, joint research and development, and industrial services, it has continuously promoted practical cooperation between enterprises, universities and research institutions of the two countries and yielded fruitful results. Going forward, it will continue to take the innovation precinct as the core hub, build a full-process landing service system, and foster an open and win-win innovation ecosystem based on a long-term cooperation mechanism.
如今,UNSW火炬创新园区累计支持280 余个产学研合作项目,联动中澳及全球超130 家企业深度参与。北京碧水源、中国煤炭科工集团、晶科能源、晶澳太阳能、深圳凯豪达氢能源等一批中国行业龙头企业在澳大利亚设立分支机构,实现技术、资本、市场的跨境协同。
To date, Torch@UNSW has supported over 280 projects with more than 130 businesses across China, Australia, and other countries. A number of leading Chinese enterprises, including Beijing Origin Water, China Coal Technology & Engineering Group, Jinko Solar, JA Solar and Shenzhen Kohodo, have subsequently established Australia-based operations, achieving cross-border collaboration in technology, capital and markets.
为深耕跨境科创合作与成果转化,火炬创新园区始终积极推动海外科研与成果转化平台建设,实现从单一项目合作到多平台协同转化的跨越。与宜兴环境科技工业园(ES&TP)合作共建的新南威尔士大学(宜兴)环境技术创新中心(新宜中心,CTET),是火炬创新园区框架下的旗舰项目,专注于环境与清洁能源领域的技术开发与概念验证,推动创新成果加快转化应用,积极服务绿色发展。与长三角国家技术创新中心合作设立的概念验证基金,着力打通科技成果转化的关键环节,通过高效验证机制加速创新技术迈向产业化。此外,去年成立的新南威尔士大学(无锡)产业创新中心(锡创中心,TCC),提供技术引进、联合研发、成果孵化、资本对接等全链条支持,积极促进中澳科技资源与项目的双向协同孵化。
To deepen cross-border cooperation and technology commercialisation, Torch@UNSW has actively advanced the development of overseas research and commercialisation platforms, achieving a leap from singe-project cooperation to multi-platform coordinated transformation. The UNSW Centre for Transformational Environmental Technologies (CTET) in Yixing is a joint venture between UNSW and the Yixing Environmental Science and Technology Park (ES&TP) serves as a flagship program under the Torch@UNSW framework. It focuses on technology development and proof-of-concept in environmental and clean energy sectors, which can accelerate the translation and application of innovative outcomes, and actively underpins green development. The Proof-of-Concept Fund launched in partnership with National Innovation Center par Excellence (NICE) aims to break through key steps in research commercialisation and advance innovative technologies toward industrialization via efficient validation mechanisms.
Furthermore, the newly founded UNSW Technology Commercialisation Centre (TCC) in last year provides full-chain support including technology introduction, joint research and development, achievement incubation and capital connection that can actively facilitate two-way collaborative incubation of Sino-Australian scientific and technological resources and projects.

Professor Julien Epps, UNSW Dean of Engineering, noted in his address that Torch@UNSW has created a translational platform which allow us not only to develop technologies, but to test them in real settings and prepare then for global scale. Meanwhile to uphold the philosophy of equal emphasis on basic research and applied transformation to move out of the laboratory and into industry, communities, and markets — both in Australia and internationally.

Over the past decade, Torch@UNSW has focused on four strategic pillars, including clean energy, water and environment, health and biotech, and technology for good that closely aligned with the key demands of industrial and social development. It facilitates the bi-directional flow and integrated collaboration of research, industrial and innovative resources between China and Australia through various methods such as R&D, technology showcase and industry matchmaking. Torch@UNSW also can accelerate the transformation of research outcomes into real-world applications continuously which can help to drive social progress and deliver tangible benefits to communities, which has evolved into a vital innovative platform connecting China and Australia with global reach.

Scott Dewar, Australian Ambassador to China, commended the fruitful achievements over the past decade in China–Australia scientific research cooperation, technology commercialization and industrial collaboration. He noted that the Torch Innovation Precinct set against the context of bilateral relations, has deepened bonds and business ties between the two countries. Looking ahead to Australia–China cooperation on global and regional issues such as APEC and climate change in 2026, he expressed hope that practical cooperation will continue to steadily advance China–Australia scientific and technological innovation as well as bilateral relations.

As we look ahead, with strengthened in-country platforms like CTET and TCC, the next decade will focus on deeper industry integration, faster commercial pathways, and scaling technologies that Torch@UNSW will continue to demonstrate how industry-led collaboration can turn research excellence into outcomes that matter for Australia, China and the world. Meanwhile, Torch@UNSW is going to align with the UNSW’s "Progress for All" ten-year strategy to further deepen its four core pillars, partner with global stakeholders to tackle global challenges including climate change, environmental protection and health management so as to build a benchmark for cross-border industry-university-research cooperation, continue to strengthen the bridge of China-Australia science and technology cooperation, and support high-quality global development and human well-being through an open and collaborative innovation ecosystem.

As we look ahead, with strengthened in-country platforms like CTET and TCC, the next decade will focus on deeper industry integration, faster commercial pathways, and scaling technologies that Torch@UNSW will continue to demonstrate how industry-led collaboration can turn research excellence into outcomes that matter for Australia, China and the world. Meanwhile, Torch@UNSW is going to align with the UNSW’s "Progress for All" ten-year strategy to further deepen its four core pillars, partner with global stakeholders to tackle global challenges including climate change, environmental protection and health management so as to build a benchmark for cross-border industry-university-research cooperation, continue to strengthen the bridge of China-Australia science and technology cooperation, and support high-quality global development and human well-being through an open and collaborative innovation ecosystem.
